The first Photo Assignment from The Art of Photography by Ted Forbes is Variations. The objective is to choose one scene and make ten different photographs. The goal is to think more creatively by forcing yourself to make multiple photos with different variations of one scene / subject. In the video Ted Forbes warned that this wouldn’t be as easy as at sounds, and I totally agree with him. But I do recommend everyone who is interested in photography to do this Photo Assignment.
Variations of an Apple Tree
For my subject I wanted something from nature. I considered a plant at home, something in the forest or something in my neighborhood. Eventually I choose an apple tree in my neighborhood. I liked the combination of nature and urban. And they always have such nice white blossom around this time of the year.
This was a valuable lesson for me personally, and something that I will definitely do again. By forcing myself to make ten different photographs I really forced myself to start to look for different ways to make the shot. I looked for different angles and looked more closely at the details. I even started to look for ways to make an abstract photo, something I always wanted to try.
So I can only say that this first lesson was a success, and I look forward to the second Photo Assignment.
